Spaceman

Today I enjoyed: Spaceman.

Say about Adam Sandler what you will, but man, is he transformable! While I would not consider myself a fan of his comical films, some of them are entertaining enough. But with Spaceman, Sandler delivers a very different, flawed and troubled character and I enjoyed that very much!

Spaceman is not really a science fiction movie though, at least not as you might expect. It is more like a character study of a troubled man and his crumbling marriage that just happens to take place during a one-man space journey to a mysterious nebular, which appeared in the Milky Way the other day. And while the science fiction part looks great and provides a nice framework, it really is the relationship between the main character Jakub (Adam Sandler) and his wife Lenka (Carey Mulligan), his loneliness and the overall human condition that makes this movie compelling.

I really liked, that the mission Jakub embarks on, launches from Czech soil, instead of the default American background. I also very much like the cinematography. The overall atmosphere looks great and supports the narrative, but even the CGI is pretty good and does not throw you off.

Overall, this is a good movie. It is neither an exciting space flick nor a comedy. It is an emotional drama in front of a science fiction backdrop with some sprinkles of weirdness.

Oh, and if you don't like spiders: This movie might not be for you. Although Paul Dano's voice is very soothing, you might not appreciate the physical appearance of his character. But I am not going to spoil the details. You have been warned!
